The 41 to 80 Story

Why Section 3 is a reasoning exam, not a knowledge exam — and what changed when I stopped memorising and started analysing.

SECTION 3

The Project 80 Method: How to Score 75–85+ Through Scientific Reasoning

“The exam doesn’t reward what you know. It rewards how well you think with what’s in front of you.”
— Project 80

CHAPTER ONE

The 41 to 80 Story

For the first six months of GAMSAT preparation, I did what every advice thread told me to do. I bought the big textbooks. I made hundreds of flashcards. I memorised organic chemistry mechanisms, enzyme pathways, force diagrams. I believed, genuinely, that Section 3 was a knowledge exam — that the student who knew the most would score the highest.

My score after that approach: 41.

The Mistake Every Student Makes

You have been told that Section 3 is a science exam. This belief — more than any knowledge gap — is why most students plateau in the 50s and 60s.

Section 3 is not testing what you know. It is testing how you think.

The turning point came when I stopped preparing and started analysing. Three weeks of reading past questions — not answering them, just reading them. I asked: what is this question actually asking me to do?

The pattern was unmistakable. Question after question gave you everything you needed. The graph contained the answer. The passage contained the mechanism. The data contained the pattern. You were not tested on what you’d memorised. You were tested on whether you could read, reason, and connect.

I rebuilt my preparation around this insight. Less content. More reasoning. I went back eight months later and scored 80.

What Changed

  • Stopped trying to memorise all of science
  • Started treating every question as a reasoning puzzle
  • Learned to extract information directly from graphs and passages
  • Built frameworks for unfamiliar content instead of fearing it
  • Practised deliberate, systematic elimination
